Choosing the Best Photo for a Personalized Kids' Book

The photo decides how much the character looks like your child. Six simple rules for a photo that works, plus what to avoid.

In a personalized book or comic, the character is drawn from the photo you upload. A good photo is the single biggest thing you can do for a great result, and it takes one minute.

1. Face the camera

A front-facing photo, or slightly turned, works best. Profiles and photos from far away give the artist much less to work with.

2. Use soft daylight

Stand your child facing a window. Avoid strong shadows across the face, a flash, or backlight from a bright window behind them.

3. Get close

The face should fill a good part of the photo. A crop of a big group photo is usually too small and blurry.

4. Keep it natural

A relaxed smile works better than a forced grin or a silly face. Glasses are fine if your child always wears them.

5. Nothing covering the face

No sunglasses, masks, hats pulled low, or hands in front of the face. Hair out of the eyes helps too.

6. A recent photo

Kids change fast. A photo from this year makes sure the hero looks like your child today.

What about the background?

It doesn't matter much: the character goes into a new world anyway, like a space station or a dinosaur valley. Just make sure your child is the clear center of the photo.

Ready? Make a comic book from your photo.
